Background:

Situated on the Isle of Tiree, off the east coast of Scotland, the school provides education for both primary and secondary age pupils. Pupils in the primary department are offered two routes of education, one in Gaelic and one in English. Primary education is housed in a 'modern, open-plan' building and pupils are grouped into four composite classes. The school works with the local community and parents to 'foster qualities such as creativity, self-discipline and self-esteem'. Tiree offers a 'healthy' range of clubs and activities, of which the majority meet at lunchtime and include accordion, badminton, book, chess, hockey, music, football and volleyball clubs. The small size of classes makes the rapid identification of pupils with special educational needs (SEN) possible. Pupils with such needs are for the most part assisted in class, but some are withdrawn into small groups for additional help. The depute headteacher becomes involved in providing any further SEN support or advice.
